This is predominantly an agricultural area, served by the local town of St Just and the ports of Penzance and Newlyn. The area is steeped in history, both ancient and modern and has recently been accorded World Heritage status on account of the former mining industry. As a centre for The Arts, Penwith has long associations with the Newlyn School, the Arts and Crafts Movement and numerous artists live, work and exhibit locally. The coastal footpath traverses rugged cliff tops giving access to coves and beaches linking Sennen to the West with St. Ives going to the East. There are many footpaths and bridleways within this area of outstanding natural beauty popular with walkers and equestrians.
