Tax Band: 'D' Royston Royston is a busy market town that lies in the north-east corner of the county on the border with Cambridgeshire. The town takes its name from the wayside cross erected by Lady Roysia in around 1066. Royston grew up at the intersection of two ancient thoroughfares: Ermine Street and Icknield Way. Ermine Street was constructed by the Romans but the prehistoric Icknield Way said to be 'the oldest road in Britain' was ancient even before the Romans invaded. Royston boasts some historic buildings, including parts of a Royal Palace used by James I and Charles I whilst hunting. There are also award-winning gardens for the visitor to see as well as Wimpole Hall, a magnificent stately home, which lies six miles to the north. The town's fascinating history is detailed at the Royston Museum. Today, light industry provides employment for the market town as well as many quaint shops and Restaurants. The Town has a mainline station which provides a fast and frequent service to London and Cambridge. For vehicles both the A1 and M11 are within easy access.
