Designed in the early 20th Century to combine the benefits of town and country, Letchworth Garden City was the world?s first example of this concept and succeeds to this day in achieving its aim. It provides attractive open green spaces throughout the town, together with excellent schools, shops and leisure facilities. LETCHWORTH Letchworth Garden City is a town in north Hertfordshire with a population of 33,600.

The town's name is taken from one of the three villages it absorbed (the other two being Willian and Norton) ? all of which featured in the Domesday Book. The town was laid out by Raymond Unwin as a demonstration of the principles established by Ebenezer Howard who sought to create an alternative to the industrial city by combining the best of town and country living.

As one of the world's first new towns and the first garden city it had great influence on future town planning. A competition was held to find a town design which could translate Howard's ideas into reality, and September 1903 the company 'First Garden City Ltd.' was formed, Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin were appointed architects, and 16 km? of land outside Hitchin were purchased for building. In keeping with the ideals only one tree was felled during the entire initial construction phase of the town, and an area surrounding the town was included in the plan - the first 'Green Belt'. THE PROPERTY This early Garden City semi detached home retains many of its authentic original features, but has also been thoughtfully extended and updated. Gas fired central heating complements the original fireplaces and many of the windows have been replaced with uPVC double-glazed units, the latter matching the original style.

There is a modern kitchen extension to the rear and a first floor bathroom with corner bath. OUTSIDE The house stands back from the road behind a front garden screened by hedges and shrub borders, which include Japanese maple and ornamental conifers. There is also a lawn and a shingle and brick paved driveway providing OFF-STREET PARKING.

A gated sideway leads to the rear garden which is about 118' in length and laid to lawn with fruit trees, ornamental shrubs and trees. Garden Shed.
