GENERAL
General
An historic country house of character, the type of which is rare
along this Cardigan Bay coastal belt. This Georgian beauty is full
of potential and deserving of a programme of sympathetic
modernisation and refurbishment. Believed to have been built in the
1840's for Elizabeth Lloyd (of Llanrhystud), although the oldest
part of the house (the kitchen etc) is much older - maybe 400 to
500 years old.
Blaenwern Farm of which this was the main farmhouse was bought in
the late 1940's in a joint farming venture between Pauline Taylor
and Barbara Saunders Davies and together they developed the world
famous Llanarth Welsh cob stud and their best known horse was
'Llanarth Braint', from whom other Champions were bred.
By the 1960's the stud farm had gone from strength to strength. It
was still managed by Pauline Taylor, and her friend and fellow
musician, Enid Lewis had bought the house and farm. Lewis had
returned home to live in the home of her grandmother, Elizabeth
Lloyd. In 1974 Blaenwern Farm was donated to the University College
of Aberystwyth with the aim that the Llanarth bloodline would be
maintained and the farm used to create a national stud for
Wales.
Enid Lewis and PaulineTaylor continued to live at Blaenwern House
until it passed to the Bigley family upon their deaths. The
Bigleys, who had managed much of the stud farm, sold the house in
1982 to begin their own stud in England where they have continued
the Llanarth line.
Blaenwern Farmhouse however was not donated to the University and
on the death of Messrs Taylor and Davies was inherited by the
Bigley Family who eventually sold it in 1982 to begin their own
Stud Farm in England where they have continued the Llanarth
line.
The property is set within its own grounds providing mainly
gardens/grassed areas with lovely mature Purple and Red flowering
Rhododendrons in the front garden. The old original stone pillared
gated entrance remains and to its side is an old Western Red Cedar
tree (first introduced to the UK in the 1850's - this ties up well
with the house's history). Also two Irish Yew trees, Chilean Pine,
Copper Beech, Ash trees etc.
PLEASE NOTE - That many of the photographs used in this literature
are historic photos during the Summer Season in order to appreciate
the various colours of the gardens and trees.
Built in attractive dressed stone, this impressive Georgian
building is Grade II listed with many original features
