My 8 year love-affair with a 1950’s red-brick semi set in the village of Billingley is coming to an end. Set amidst acres of undulating farmland where Barnsley’s east meets Doncaster’s west boundary, the village oozes its conservation status, but any ‘google’ search won’t convey the beauty and character you discover from living here.

The previous resident lived here for 60years and since 2011 I’ve refurbished throughout including all rooms, outbuilding, and gardens to 3 sides.

Peace, quiet and good neighbours are ever present, as are the views from the front (north) and back (south), providing a carousel of trees, farmland and wildlife, forever changing with the seasons and the incredible light we’re so lucky to experience. It’s unquestionably South Yorkshire at it’s best.

The hidden treasures the back garden gives up have been a constant source of enjoyment, particularly the shallow stream that supports a variety of wildlife and plants rarely seen elsewhere. Bird enthusiasts will see moorhens, goldfinches, blue, great and long tailed tits, the occasional woodpecker, sparrow hawk, buzzards, Tawny, Little and Barn owls and more, just looking out of the kitchen windows. Add to this the myriad of footpaths on the doorstep where if lucky you can see hares, rabbits, foxes and occasional deer.

A further 15min walk takes you to the Dearne Valley, where the river meanders from west to east through fields, woodland and numerous wildlife reserves, the most important being the RSPB’s “Old Moor’ reserve just 2 miles south of us, one of Yorkshire’s blue-ribbon visitor attractions.

As important, road (A1, M1 and M18) and rail links (Sheffield, Leeds, Doncaster) are minutes away. Local transport on the doorstep provides access to Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham. All the major supermarkets are within 10 minutes drive, along with major retail outlets at Cortonwood Retail Park (3 miles).

I fully intended this would be my last house, but circumstances have punctured my dream. I’ve been lucky to have been so happy here, if only for a short time, and hope the next resident has the same pleasures I’ve had.
