DESCRIPTION
Laverstoke and Freefolk was designated as a Conservation Area in
1990 by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, in recognition of
the special architectural and historic interest of the area.
The history of both is related to their situation along the course
of the River Test, with the presence of two mill buildings known
from the time of the Domesday survey. When Joseph Portal acquired
the Laverstoke estate in 1785 his legacy of the paper making
industry was to influence the shaping of the character and
appearance of the Conservation Area. Most buildings in Laverstoke
were constructed to house the mill workers and date from 1785. The
line of architecturally distinctive Portal estate cottages further
to the south, along Laverstoke Lane, are characterised by their use
of flint with red brickwork and retain their original form and
materials.
Connells offer an opportunity to own an historic four bedroom flint
and brick Portal mill workers cottage in the countryside idyll of
Laverstoke, boasting a wealth of features including wood floors,
wood burning stove, roll top bath, exposed brick and flint walls.
The property also comprises two reception rooms, two bathrooms,
large kitchen/diner and a private rear garden. Viewing is highly
recommended.
