The cottage takes its name from the the large Sarsen stone in front of No.1, known as The Blowing Stone and apparently used by King Alfred to summon his troops from miles around.

The village has a public house, The Blowing Stone Inn and a very pretty church, while Uffington, a slightly larger village about 1.5 miles to the west, has another pub, a large church known as The Cathedral of The Vale, a thriving village shop, a good primary school, sports club with tennis, football and cricket facilities and a wonderful village hall which hosts many plays, village parties, teas, lunches, meetings and varied entertainments. Directions From Wantage take the B4507 towards Childrey and Ashbury. After about 2.4 miles proceed straight over at the Childrey Holloway crossroads and continue on for a further 2.3 miles before turning left at the crossroads, sign posted to Lambourn.
