ROUGHTON Roughton is a small village three and a half miles inland from Cromer on the main road to Norwich. It is an age-old home of man and on the Heath there are prehistoric burial mounds. There's a church with a 1000-year-old tower. The church is mainly Saxon with some Tudor battlements and on the walls of the nave is a gallery of sixteen sculptures including a toad, a lion, and a dragon. A genius found sanctuary on Roughton Heath in September 1933, his name was Professor Albert Einstein, As he told a local reporter 'All I want is peace, and could I have found a more peaceful retreat than here in England?' One of Einsteins's callers in Norfolk was the sculptor Jacob Epstein who began the famous bust of Einstein in Roughton. The village has a pub, The New Inn.
