The Location Great Gaddesden is a village and civil parish in Dacorum Hundred in Hertfordshire, England. It is located in the Chiltern Hills, north of Berkhamsted. The parish borders to Flamstead, Hemel Hempstead, Nettleden and Little Gaddesden and also to Studham in Bedfordshire. The Church St. John the Baptist was probably the site of a pre-Christian sanctuary. The church shows features of every period since the 12th century. Part of the chancel with Roman bricks dates back to the early 12th century. The old church was extended by the south aisle in the 13th century and the north aisle in the 14th century, the west tower was built in the 15th century and the north chapel in the 18th. The medieval convent of St Margarets stood northwest of the village. For a while the site served as a WW2 RCAF transit camp and later a boarding school for children with Special needs, and it is now a Theravadin Buddhist monastery, Amaravati Buddhist Monastery, complete with temple. The River Gade has its name from Gaddesden. Its clear water is used for watercress beds along the river and at Water End south of Great Gaddesden is an old corn mill provided by the stream. The bridge over the river at Water End has a medieval appearance but was built in the 19th century Schooling There are a number of excellent schools in the area including Great Gaddesden junior school, Berkhamsted Collegiate School for Boys and Girls, Merchant Taylors for Boys, Heatherton House, Royal Masonic School and Wycombe Abbey School for Girls. There is also the world famous Ashridge Management College. Transport Links Great Gaddesden is considered a highly desirable commuter village, with excellent transport links by road and rail from Berkhamsted or Hemel Hempstead. The mainline station provides a regular and direct link to London Euston in a little over 30 minutes. Major road connections nearby include the M25 (J20) and the M1 (J8), both of which are around 8 miles away. The A41 dual carriageway runs to the South of the town, providing an excellent connection to Hemel Hempstead, Watford, Tring and Aylesbury Amenities in nearby Berkhamsted Berkhamsted provides a wide range of shopping opportunities, including independent boutiques and eateries with major stores such as Waitrose and Boots on the High Street too. The larger towns of Hemel Hempstead and Watford offer wider facilities, including Debenhams and John Lewis department stores respectively.
