" Uppershaw is an outstanding detached family home, dating back to the early 1900's. It has an interesting history, being referred to by the comedian Griff Rhys Jones in his autobiography, as he lived in a house nearby and used to visit it when it was owned by the eminent Australian chest doctor, Sir Geoffrey Todd. The house is set in stunning grounds, amidst glorious countryside, just to the north of Midhurst and just a few miles south of Haslemere. The house has an extremely warm feel to it, and has many features typical of its era. These include high, gracious ceilings, leaded light windows, attractive working fireplaces, timber flooring and well proportioned rooms. The tastefully presented accommodation is ideal for a large family and the house is complimented by glorious gardens and grounds. These consist of a sweeping gravel entrance, formal gardens surrounding the house with manicured lawns and a paddock beyond. The gardens were originally conceived by the famous landscape gardener and artist, Gertrude Jekyll. The sale of Uppershaw represents an excellent and rare opportunity to acquire a fine family house of immense character, set in grounds of around 2.3 acres.
Situation
The house sits in glorious gardens which abut the former hospital, King Edward V11. There is stunning countryside all round the area, which sits just to the north of Midhurst and only a few miles south of Haslemere, which has a mainline station to London Waterloo. It also offers a selection of shops and schools, as does the market town of Midhurst. There are numerous sporting activities to be enjoyed in the area, including cricket and polo at Cowdray near Midhurst, horse racing and golf at Goodwood, which also hosts the world famous motor sports events and sailing on the coast.
