Location
With its origins believed to be around 700 AD, Colyton appears in
the Domesday Book as Culitone. Maturing into a market town and
agricultural centre, Colyton became known as "The most rebellious
town in Devon", as its inhabitants gave widespread support to the
Monmouth Rebellion in 1685. Facilities on offer in the town today
include a good variety of local shops, churches, doctor's surgery,
a selection of public houses, a primary school and sports field. In

some 5 miles to the east, and a mainline railway station connecting
