Location 
With its origins believed to be around 700 AD, Colyton appears in the Domesday Book as Culitone. Maturing into a market town and agricultural centre, Colyton became known as "The most rebellious town in Devon", as its inhabitants gave widespread support to the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685. Facilities on offer in the town today include a good variety of local shops, churches, doctor's surgery, a selection of public houses, a primary school and sports field. In addition country markets are held in the town centre on a regular basis. The World Heritage Jurassic Coastline at Lyme Regis lies some 5 miles to the east, and a mainline railway station connecting with Exeter and London Waterloo is at Axminster, 5 miles to the northeast. The renowned Colyton Grammar School, which offers exceptional educational and recreational facilities, is in the nearby village of Colyford, and Colyton also has a tramway terminus connecting with Seaton and Colyford.
