" 2 Oaks House is part of the original Oaks House built by the Durham County Coal Company in the mid-1830s, as the new railways opened up the Gaunless valley's highly-valued mines to wider markets. Throughout the 19th century the house was occupied by mine managers and owners. The property includes some of the original outbuildings such as a granary, later transformed into stables and later still into garage/workshop areas. In the twentieth-century, with the decline of mining in the area, nature reclaimed the valley, so that the present house commands beautiful views of the Gaunless valley, of Cragg Wood and Cockfield Fell to the West. Evenwood has a primary school and shop in the village, whilst Bishop Auckland 6 miles away has a wide selection of supermarkets, retail outlets and secondary schools. Darlington, 10 miles away has a train station on the mainline with connections to London and Edinburgh.
