Cotherstone is a much favoured Teesdale village supporting a traditional range of amenities including post office/stores, two public houses, church, chapel and primary school. It has two village greens and comprises an interesting variety of houses and cottages.

The nearby historic town of Barnard Castle provides a broader range of shopping, educational and recreational facilities and is often referred to as the gateway to Teesdale.
