The History of the Westcliffe Cottage

A large bit of land 40ft by 200ft on Peabody Road. The land was sold by Henry Jesty Ellis Brake to Mr Joseph sacheveril Chandos Player who was a Bookbinder of Havestock Hill in Middlesex. He paid Fourty Pounds in 1869.

Mr Player sectioned the land into three parcels and built "Bijouville" 81 Peabody Road , "Bijoulette" 79 Peabody Road and Mizpah 83 Peabody Road .
Bijouville now Westcliffe cottage was built in July 1875 by Mr J,S,C Player.
The house was named "bijouville" which means small jewel house in French.

In July 1901 it was sold to his son "Joseph Charles Player" who was living in Middlesex.

Mr Joseph Charles Player died in 1922 and left it to his son Mr Joseph Henry Player of Middlesex.

In 1954 it was sold to John Alfred James, a dairy farmer from Worplesdon. He paid £75.

In 1964, Joan Gladys Edna Mitchell purchased the family home. She was the daughter of the previous tenant. She paid £1200.

1983 Roger Asplin and Gwen Whiffin. They named the cottage "rose cottage"

2022 The Mitchell Family purchased the home. They stripped the house back to its original brick front and discovered lots of hidden gems. The green in the hallway is the same colour as was discovered upon removing layers of paint all over the house! They found and restored the original wood panelled wall in the lounge which had been covered over since at least the 1950s.
They renamed the cottage "Westcliffe" as it was in the early 1900s.

The house will be 150 years old in July 2025

The home was rented by the Masters Family, Ernest, Elizabeth, Winifred, Ivy and Barbara from around 1903.
They were bakers from Kent and named the cottage "Westcliffe" we assume this was after the village in Kent.
The family ran the Golden Grain bakery in Camp Road, North camp while living here.
They then moved in approx 1915 to Osbourne Road and opened a second Bakery in what is now the Swimming Pool Shop. Their daughters married bakers who came to work for their father s shop. Mr Masters also started one of the first Scout groups in Farnborough.

The home was then rented by the Webb Family from 1915.
Arthur, Mary, Ernest, Lillian, Violet, Joan and Tony.
Arthur worked drawing Blueprints for the Royal Aircraft establishment in Farnborough. He was a keen Gardner and most of the garden was greenhouses and vegetable patches!
The family rented the cottage until 1964 when Arthur and Mary s youngest daughter Joan and her Husband David Mitchell purchased the house.
Arthur and Mary s youngest son Tony, spoke of creeping down the stairs during the Second World War and listening to the wireless radio through the now restored wood panelled wall in the lounge. Another member of the family then purchased number 79 Peabody road.
In 1939, 8 people called this little cottage home!
The family loved this home and stayed for 68 years! From 1915 to 1983 when it was sold to Mr & Mrs Asplin."
