Mount Stores in Pleshey holds historical significance as part of the ancient motte and bailey castle that once stood there. The castle, with its large motte mound and surrounding bailey inner courtyard , was a prominent feature of Pleshey for centuries. The castle itself was eventually demolished, but the motte and the 15th century red brick bridge remain. The Mount Stores name likely refers to the storage areas or buildings associated with the castle.


Pleshey is an historic small village to the northwest of Chelmsford. It is built around the site of a former motte and bailey castle which was once the ancestral home of Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex and one of the 25 Magna Carta barons. At the hub of the community is the Holy Trinity Church and the village hall. A general store, post office and primary school are all in the nearby village of Great Waltham together with the renowned Galvin Green Man pub restaurant. Primary schools are nearby at Ford End and Little Waltham.

The city of Chelmsford, about 7 miles away, is the county town of Essex and offers a wide choice of shopping, restaurants, bars and sports facilities and is also on the main line into London Liverpool Street.

Pleshey falls within the catchment of some exceptional schools including Chelmer Valley High School comprehensive . King Edward Grammar School boys , Chelmsford County High School for Girls, Felsted and its well known independent school and just 4.5 miles away and New Hall School are also within easy reach.
