Why We Love Clarendon Cottage

The remarkable story of Clarendon Cottage is only part of the experience of living in this beautiful house.

Once situated on the edges of Enfield Chase, the Duchy of Lancaster s historic royal hunting grounds, Gentleman s Row is an important part of the Enfield landscape, indeed for Nikolaus Pevsner it was the best street in Enfield

Set back and approached via a private front garden that is only a stone s throw from the New River Loop, the visitor is greeted by an enchanting and romantic view of this terrace of houses, each with their own unique style. No 17 presents itself as a late 17th century grade II* listed house, though with clear medieval origins dating back to the late 15th century. Stucco fronted with sash windows, each framed with green shutters, the house is reminiscent of a country house but with all the advantages of easily getting into the city or West End.

I shall do very well here Charles Lamb 1825

The renowned English essayist Charles Lamb and his sister, Mary, are best known for their collaborative magnum opus collection Tales from Shakespeare.

Many of the greatest names of English literature are associated with the Lambs, amongst them Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Hazlitt, Robert Southey and William Wordsworth

Mary battled with ill health and it became Charles life s work to take care of his beloved sister, which, in 1825, meant moving to this peaceful cottage.

On entering the cottage today, the visitor is able to absorb the many centuries of history and yet revel in the comforts that come with a well planned house.

The spacious entrance hall with original beams and stone floors leads to a series of rooms that each flow from one to the other, where working fireplaces, panelled walls are found in the library, living rooms and dining room.

In 2019 the cottage underwent a series of improvements, most notably the kitchen was moved to the 19th century rear extension which intriguingly had been a former dame school and now features a double height vaulted ceiling.

The kitchen, dining room and sitting room all lead on to the large 80 ft garden, which features a decorative pond, terracing, lawn and summer house.

The first floor has three bedrooms, the principal of which has a large dressing room and en suite bathroom, the second floor features an atmospheric room that would work equally well as a studio.
