Steeped in history and in an idyllic location adjacent to the river
Yar this unique, single storey property was originally built in the
1890s as the railway cottage when the railway ran alongside the
river. While the trains are long gone and the railway has now
become a bridle and cycle path, the cottage is just waiting for new
owners to modernise its accommodation to make it a stunning home
where you can enjoy the magnificent views, a plethora of local
wildlife including swans on the river and in a peaceful and
tranquil environment.
With its triple pitched and varied roof lines, chimney stack,
barge boards, wood framed windows and white painted exterior, the
cottage has instant external appeal. The hallway has tiled flooring
that flows throughout the property and provides immediate access to
the open plan, double aspect lounge kitchen dining room with a log
burner for those cold winter days and a kitchen area as well as
French doors to the conservatory. This is a great feature of the
cottage as it spans the width of the property and includes a
free-standing log burner you can cosy up to on a cool evening. It
also provides additional seating and dining areas as well as
delightful views of the river and the extensive garden.
The U-shaped kitchen area is just waiting for new owners to
create their own dream kitchen while the adjacent utility room
includes a recently installed new boiler. There is a shower room
that requires updating as well as a family bathroom and two double
bedrooms.
The delightful and extensive garden surrounds most of the
cottage and is bordered by hedging on one side and a paved area
with a picket fence that runs alongside the bridle path and the
river on the other, which in total measures 0.95 acres. There is a
driveway for off road parking just outside the front door, a
brick-built barbecue adjacent to the conservatory, raised vegetable
and shrub beds, a number of greenhouses and garden sheds, a natural
pond and a meadow area as well as views as far as Yarmouth.
What the Owner says:
This cottage has been in our family for the past 24 years and it
has been a charming home in a beautiful location. Although it is
very quiet and peaceful it is less than half a mile to Freshwater
and there is a nearby Tescos Superstore as well as independent
shops and restaurants in the village. If you want a meal out but
don't want to worry about driving there is the award-winning Red
Lion pub only a short stroll along the road.
There are a variety of attractive bays if you want to visit the
beach or wander along to Tennyson Down which is a great place for a
walk with the dog. Indeed there are wonderful walks that take you
along to the Needles and Afton Downs and, if you are interested in
nature, there are some wonderful rare plants or species of wildlife
including red squirrels, rare butterflies and kestrels you might
see along the way.
Golfers can enjoy their game at the Freshwater Bay Golf Club
while the Freshwater Sports Club and West Bay Country Club and Spa
are within easy reach. It is not far to Yarmouth that, as well as
the ferry port and marina, includes a 16th century castle, a Grade
II listed pier that provides views across The Solent and a raft of
restaurants, bars and individual shops. There is also nearby
Tapnell Park and Fort Victoria Park.
