DESCRIPTION
Meeson House is a fine Grade II Listed village residence which is thought to date from around 1700 with a fountain head on the Georgian front elevation dated 1733 with subsequent enlargements in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. At one time the property was part of the Earl of Shrewsbury's Estate and was a farmhouse until the early part of the twentieth century. In the parish church there is a commemorative window to the Meeson family after which the house is named.
The residence is built of brick on a sandstone plinth to the older part with rendered elevations to the south and west. The formal early nineteenth century front elevation has uniform sash windows and contrasts with the informality of the gabled brick elevations to the rear.
The house provides a superb blend of both formal and informal living areas to the ground floor and offers excellent sleeping accommodation to the upper two storeys. The house has large principal rooms with high ceilings and superb fireplaces together with a fine oak staircase, much exposed timbering, flag and oak floors and a wonderful panelled dining room.
ACCOMMODATION
Meeson House is entered through a porch with stone pilasters and pediment which enclose a semi-circular fan light typical of its period. The reception hall has a lovely, stone flagged floor and part panelled walls. There is a sitting room with marble fireplace with scrolled supports and decorative cast iron surround together with windows with shutters, two painted pine bookcases and wooden flooring and there is a formal drawing room with marble fireplace with fluted decoration and a period Coalbrookdale cast iron grate together with two windows with shutters. The staircase hall has an original, built-in oak cupboard and a beautiful oak staircase which is a listed feature of the property. The dining room has original, 18th century oak panelling with a stone fireplace in an oak surround. The breakfast kitchen has been re-fitted with a range of units with granite surfaces and a double oven Aga set within an inglenook style surround. There is a rear lobby, larder, laundry and extensive game larder with tiled set floor together with a modern Amdega conservatory which is fully glazed and which takes maximum advantage of the lovely views across the gardens. Above the kitchen is a useful workshop.
The original staircase rises to the landing with curved gallery and storage cupboards. The principal suite has a lobby, bedroom, dressing room and bathroom, there is a guest suite of bedroom with ensuite bathroom, two further bedrooms and a shower room with a further two bedrooms to the upper storey and an extensive boarded attic space.
PLANNING
Planning permission has been passed for the extension of the kitchen and the demolition of the conservatory and conversion of existing rooms to provide a gym together with the incorporation of the first floor workshop into further bedroom and bathroom provision. Planning permission application number 07/0227, decision date 27th April 2007. Listing building consent application number 07/0228, decision date 26th April 2007. OUTSIDE
Meeson House stands behind a small front garden which is enclosed by a semi-circular cast and wrought iron railings with a tall copper beech hedge inside. The matured, walled garden is a particular feature of the property and enjoys a high degree of privacy and seclusion which belies its proximity to the village. At the rear and side of the house is a paved terrace with steps leading to the extensive principal lawn with island beds and borders with a profusion of flowering and ornamental trees including purple maple, golden acacia, shrubs and many herbaceous plants. There is a fine old Yew tree in the corner with raised beds beyond and espalier fruit trees on an old wall. There are climbing roses, clematis and virginia creeper. A curved, clipped hedge and trellis forms the division from kitchen garden with soft fruit and a rustic summer house. There is an extensive garage for two cars with an adjoining store and a range of outbuildings including a further garage.
