DESCRIPTION
The Farmhouse at New Buildings Farm comprises a substantial residence of Georgian origins with subsequent extensions enhancing the scope of the accommodation provided. The house was built about the turn of the 18th century in the reign of George III. It was a rebuilding then of a house that had stood on the site or thereabouts since 1739 and from this fact took the name New Buildings. It was rebuilt by George Durant II, owner of Tong Castle and Lord of Tong, whose father had been paymaster for the British expeditionary force in the West Indies during the seven years war with France and Spain which lasted from 1756 to 1763. In the August of 1762 the capital of Cuba was plundered by the British Army and George Durant I took over ?300,000 from the looting. In 1762, with some of this money, George Durant I bought Tong Castle including the parish of Tong, from the Duke of Kingston, so the money for New Buildings Farmhouse came from the sack of Havannah. To confirm this, a little way up from the Bell Inn on the Newport Road, there are a group of cottages and an area known as 'Tong Havannah' and are so called to this day.
The Farmhouse is unusual in some respects, it has a most imposing faade and is quite large, the reason for its size is that it was, together with the wall on the west side of the farmhouse, built to obscure the view and offend a neighbour. George Durant II and Mr Bishton who lived at The Red House in the field opposite on the south side of Morning Brook were in disagreement over water rights concerning the brook and George Durant II took his revenge in this way.
The residence has a superb formal elevation and is constructed in the majority of rustic brick over three storeys beneath a pitched, tile clad roof. The front elevation has interesting arched details with full height end gable projections and casement windows throughout. The property stands behind a wide paved front terrace with a small flight of paved steps leading to the front door.
The house has been substantially improved by the current sellers with the replacement of kitchen and bathroom suites and re-decoration throughout.
ACCOMMODATION
The house is approached from the rear, courtyard elevation and is entered via the reception hall which has a large walk-in cloaks cupboard with fitted shelving and coat hooks together with a separate guest cloakroom with white suite of WC and vanity wash basin. There is a superb drawing room with part oak panelled walls with oak plaque rails above, beamed and raftered ceiling and a delightful through elevation with windows to either side. The dining room creates a lovely, formal entertaining area and there is a charming sitting room with an inglenook style fireplace with heavy oak beam above, a beamed and raftered ceiling and French doors to the front elevation. The large breakfast kitchen has been comprehensively re-fitted by David Hartill of Shrewsbury with a range of handcrafted solid wood units with granite working surfaces, space for a range style cooker with extraction unit above, two built-in Bosch fridges, an integrated Bosch dishwasher, an integrated Bosch washing machine and concealed under-unit lighting. There is Indian slate flooring together with Chinese slate splashback tiling. The kitchen is complemented by a useful larder with an extensive range of shelving.
