Listed Grade II, The Old Rectory is a substantial late Georgian house incorporating many delightful architectural features including fine architraves, ceiling cornices and original open fireplaces. Built in 1814 by the then Rector, The Reverend Devereux Mytton the original house was designed by Joseph Bromfield, a noted Shrewsbury architect who designed and worked on a number of important houses in Shropshire and North Wales. The original house comprised mainly the present West Wing which was built in the style of a Tuscan Villa as popularised by Nash. A later incumbent, Archdeacon Foulkes, added the substantial centre and east wing (Annexe) of the house in about 1865. He also found time to build a new church in the village.
Today the Old Rectory offers comfortable well appointed accommodation. Care has been taken to maintain many attractive period features.
A driveway crosses the south lawn and sweeps round to a tarmacadam forecourt on the north side of the house. The house is principally built of stone with rough cast elevations under a slate roof, the principal house is approached via a pillared verandah.
The Old Rectory is located on the western edge of the small village of Llandyssil, about 3 miles south west from Montgomery. The village has a substantial Parish Church, a Public House and a Bakery, which is well known locally. It is approached by quiet by-roads, the lane which leads from Montgomery to Llandyssil commands a splendid view of the valley in which the Old Rectory itself is prominent.
