THE GROUNDS
The grounds are a particular feature of this property extending to 5 acres or thereabouts providing extensive grassed areas, well stocked wood plantations, shrubs and flower borders. There is also a tool shed and log store both with electricity.
THE GARDENS AND SURROUNDING LAND
Chibembe Lodge is surrounded by approximately 5 acres of semi-mature woodland, woodland garden and formal flower and shrub garden areas. The woodland was planted on about 4 of the 5 acres in 1994, a mix of British native species in the main. The ash and alder used within it as ?nurse trees? are now being felled for firewood and to create a suitable area for a small orchard near the North-East corner of the woodland.
Within the woodland there are three glades each planted with some ornamental trees including the Golden Deodar cypress, the Persian Ironwood, the Wedding Cake Tree and other ornamental dogwoods, horse chestnuts and beeches.
Within the woodland there is one wet area where swamp cypresses and a cut leafed alder are planted and there are also several eucalypts, a giant redwood and a large metasequoia placed nearer the house.
One of Chibembe Lodges most diverse features is the bog area through which an ephemeral stream winds. This is home to ferns, hostas, candelabra primulas and other bog loving plants. On it?s boundaries are planted the handkerchief tree, a large aralia and some bamboos whilst on the drier banks are rhododendrons, azaleas, two azaras, a crinodendron and a judas tree. To complete the set is a large magnolia campbelii which has flowered for 2 springs, a large Chilean firebush and a beautiful styrax, already flowering.
The garden has a 5 metre long fishpond with water lilies and amphibians and is a magnet for dragonflies in the summer. The pump within it circulates water through the Italianate fountain in the centre of the cottage garden before it cascades back to the pond through a series of waterfalls. There is ample space for garden tools and equipment and a rabbit proof area which could be used for vegetables or soft fruit. A small concealed greenhouse is useful for storage of the more tender potted plants during winter and propagation in the spring. It has light and power available and inbuilt shelving.
The immediate area around the house is planted with heathers and many other ground cover plants for minimal maintenance and the house is surrounded by fragrant shrubs and climbers to enhance the joy of living in such a beautiful place.
