ASHBY-DE-LA-ZOUCH DETAILS This ancient market town is on the borders of Leicestershire and Derbyshire. It is placed in the centre of a web of routes leading to most of the principal towns and cities of the Midlands. Ashby is twinned with Pithiviers, a town in the South of France.
In Ashby itself is a castle in which The Hastings Family once lived. Also Ashby is close to Calke Abbey, Staunton Harold House Park and 'Conkers'.
The Bulls Head in Market Street is said to be the oldest house in Ashby and dates from the 14th century. After the surrender of the Castle in the Civil War, Cromwell's ordnance sergeant was billeted there while supervising the blowing up of the castle walls, and Cromwell himself is reputed to have taken a drink there.
The White Hart Public House was the last place in Ashby to stage bear baiting. The bear pit can still be seen inside the pub. It is also reputed to have been a haunt for the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin.
Ashby became a spa town in the 19th century when tourists visited the Ivanhoe Baths filled with water drawn from a spa in Moira and moved by train. These closed in 1884, and were unfortunately demolished in the 1960's. Now shopping is the attraction for visitors and there are a variety of locally owned and specialist shops alongside famous high street names as well as the delightful award winning Mill Lane Mews.
