If you are looking for a fine period property, then look no further.
Circa 1905 Arthur Brocklehurst, a Waterfoot architect, was commissioned by R.D Ashworth (Felt Manufacturer) to design homes for his Nephews Oliver and George. Each was given five thousand pounds to spend on the design.
In 1907 Oliver built Durran. It was rumoured that the finishing touches were based on a Scottish castle in the Isle of Rhum, ie the decorative tiles, the Isle of Skye mosaic marble floor in the entrance hallway and cloakroom.
The property typifies the craftsmanship of the era, from the fine, hand carved, sweeping staircase and hand crafted kitchen down to the individual door plates and handles.
Hints of the original owners inspiration can be found throughout.
The window lintels are Bunter Sandstone which is the same sandstone used on Liverpool Cathedral. Liverpool Cathedral was started in 1904 so is the same period as Durran.
Similarly the stained glass windows have echoes of the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh was working in this period and the Willow Tearooms in Glasgow were built in 1904.
The house itself enjoys a large elevated southerly position, a sweeping cobbled driveway leads you majestically through the trees.
There is ample parking to both the front and side of the property plus two garages.
When the house was built, the gardens were not divided and a grass Tennis court was set in the rear lawns.
This has now been divided but still boasts ample lawns, patio and hidden garden ideal for children.
The property also boasts an indoor, heated swimming pool set within the grounds.
Internally, you cannot fail to be impressed by it's proportion.
You are first greeted by the great hall, with the Oak staircase taking centre stage. There are two large sitting rooms located off the hallway as well as dining room, kitchen, W/C cloaks and servants pantry. On the same floor, the stable area has been converted to an study, ideally situated away from the main house.
To the first floor there are five bedrooms, the master being en-suite, plus a family bathroom. One feature worthy of mention, in the second bedroom, is the semi circular window seat, which provides exceptional, panoramic views of Rossendale, Holcombe and Scout Moor.
Originally the rear of the property contained the servants quarters, with back stairs leading down to the scullery.
This has now been converted to a fitness area / bedroom five and the back stairs now lead to the rear entrance hall and study.
