Historical information
Bellevue was built in 1910/11 for the factor of the Duchal Estate, one Ian Carson. He was of Irish extraction and every year brought over his friends and relatives as hedgers, ditchers and dykers. This accounts for the 'T' shape of the building as the labourers were accommodated in the bothy in the leg of the 'T', sleeping upstairs and eating downstairs with their own internal staircase and external door, through which Mrs Carson would pass the food from her living accommodation in the crossbar of the 'T'.
The house should properly be called 'Belleview, as Mrs Carson was born Isabelle 'Bella' Stevenson and she had a 'view' of the construction of the house from the next cottage along at Carsenowe, having indicated to Mr Carson that she could not marry him until she had suitable accommodation to move into.
Legend has it that of a weekend Mr Carson played the accordion on the stairs and his friend played the fiddle. Between them they provided music for two eightsome reels - one in the living room and one in the sitting room.
