This property is steeped in history. In the 17th century it used to be a pub called The Stag which serviced travellers who crossed the Bishop's Weir into Alresford from the north. After the 1689 fire, Thomas Clarke fixed a furnace for brewing in one of the lower rooms on the east side and by 1743 the Inn was referred to as the Stag's Head. It stayed this way until the beginning of the 20th century when the licensed lapsed and the property came into the hands of the Evans family.
