Description
Built in the Chinese cottage orne style from a plan by the Regency architect John Nash. Old Came Rectory is the historic home of the Dorset poet Rev William Barnes, Thomas Hardy's mentor. The home was visited by many famous authors and literary figures during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The present owners of this Grade II listed house have carefully repaired the building to its original appearance, keeping many original features.

Owners Comments "Surrounded by the rolling countryside, wildlife and many scenic walks in Hardy country.The house is on three floors so there is plenty of room. The big kitchen dining area has been perfect for family gatherings. The house is warm and cosy and the open fire in the sitting room adds extra warmth on chilly winter evenings. All rooms have fireplaces of which all are regularly swept. The sunny walled garden has a summer house with power and lighting, large circular pond with fountain and a formal layout. There is also a large greenhouse, fruit cage and orchard. The Jurassic Coast is a short drive away and is close to Poole Harbour, Swanage, Luluworth Cove, Bridport and Lyme Regis. Dorchester is within very easy reach to shops, restaurants and trains to London Waterloo and Bath.Old Came Rectory has an important history. In the 19th Century it was the home of the Dorset Poet Rev William Barnes who was mentor and close friend to Thomas Hardy the author. In the early 20th century it was visited and stayed in by many famous literary figures who came to see Thomas Hardy. Including Sir Frederick Treves, great Victorian surgeon and former pupil of William Barnes. In his book devoted to Dorset describes the Old Rectory as "Homely as a cottage, but with a garden worthy of a manor."
