SITUATION The Pump House is situated in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park in a semi-elevated location on the outskirts of the popular village of Postbridge. Moretonhampstead lies 8 miles to the east and Tavistock 12 miles to the west. Other towns with shops and day-to-day amenities nearby are Princetown (6 miles), Chagford (7 miles) and Widdecombe-in-the-moor (6 miles). There are primary schools in Princetown, Widdecombe and Moretonhampstead. The historic university and cathedral city of Exeter lies about 22 miles to the east and Plymouth lies 22 miles to the south west.
Postbridge has a shop/post office, an inn, church and village hall as well as the national park visitor information centre. Dartmoor has many thousands of acres of unspoilt moorland countryside offering a wide range of outdoor pursuits including walking, riding, cycling and fishing. Postbridge is also noted for having the finest example of a clapper bridge in the county. Straddling the East Dart River and dating from the early 1780s, it is clearly visible as you drive through the village. Further afield are the hamlets of Bellever and Challacombe, individual properties like the famous Warren House Inn and Powder Mills also consider themselves part of the moorland community of Postbridge.
