SITUATION AND DESCRIPTION
Plymouth has a dearth of good period property thanks to the Luftwaffe and post-war reconstruction. However, there are pockets of delightful property in the city and Cleve Villa is one such house.
Tucked away in a relatively quiet residential part of Laira in a small cul de sac, Cleve Villa is one of the best examples of Strawberry Hill gothic within the city boundaries. Late 18th century neo-classicism had been in vogue for a long time and many people felt it was time for a change. One of the prime movers of new interest in the gothic style was Horace Walpole. Walpole's country house, Strawberry Hill in Twickenham constructed around 1750, was a fancifully romantic gothic cottage. The style took many of the decorative elements of exterior medieval gothic and moved them to the interior of the house. Like Walpole's home, Cleve Villa is adorned with touches such as cusp and crocketed arches. Radical changes from the soft, balanced, classical theme, Strawberry Hill gothic developed fast into the gothic revival of the late 19th Century which typified Victorian buildings. In his Buildings of England, Pevsner mentions Cleve Villa as having "a trellis veranda and lattice glazing all belonging to a little development of cottages. They are now surrounded by a nicely haphazard group of artisan cottages circa 1900". With its glazed spandrels, octagonal panes, intersecting heads and shaped fretted arches, Grade II listed Cleve Villa is a delightful piece of English architectural and cultural history.
Cleve Villa is a very comfortable and practical family home. The purchaser will not be buying a museum-piece! With well-proportioned and very well laid out accommodation, the ground floor features three separate reception rooms downstairs, a well fitted kitchen and useful pantry. The first floor has two large bedrooms (the main bedroom having an en suite dressing room and en suite shower room and WC off) and there are two further large bedrooms on the second floor. Outside is a delightful, level garden with the benefit of a garage and there is a utility room and workshop/studio leading off the rear hall.
About a quarter of a mile from the Plym estuary, Cleve Villa is in a little oasis.. There is ease of access by public transport or road into the centre Plymouth two miles away. The A38 Expressway is only about three quarters of a mile away which links with the M5 at Exeter.
