Summary Chilcote Manor is an imposing 19th century house
offering well proportioned accommodation with high ceilings, large
windows and impressive fireplaces. The house has been
sympathetically restored by the current owners with incredible
attention to detail. Now beautifully and elegantly presented the
character and period features have not been lost however the
combination of these characteristics combined with discreet modern
fittings is quite extraordinary. Outside there is ample parking, an
enclosed courtyard with a variety of outbuildings, open garage,
lawned gardens with further private screened garden and small
orchard.
Situation Chilcote Manor dominates the small cluster of farm
buildings that comprise the hamlet of Chilcote. The house occupies
an elevated position with views across farm land, particularly to
the South and West with the city of Wells and cathedral clearly
visible.
Services Private drainage. Private spring water. Oil fired
central heating. Oil fired Aga.
HISTORY Chilcote Manor was built as a substantial farmhouse
during the mid nineteenth century in the Gothic Revival style. The
stature of the property reflects the relative prosperity
experienced in dairy farming during this period owing to the advent
of the railways. Architecturally Chilcote Manor bears many
hallmarks of the Victorian Gothic. The distinctive turret, with its
original weather vane and chiming bell, contains a fully
functioning clock by Cornelius Tyte* (II) dated 1868.
. Chilcote retains much that is original to the property,
notably its fish-scale slate roof and cast iron casement windows
bearing brass "fist" latches. According to an agent's sales
particulars of 1913 the courtyard contained out-offices which
consisted of a "wash house, wood house, coal house, store room and
gig house'. This accommodation now bears evidence of stabling in
its more recent past, and the gig house has long since been used
for the motorcar.
. More recently Chilcote Manor was the property of Sir
Edward Thursfield whilst he was High Sherriff of Somerset, in 1941.
Around this time the house became detached from all its farmland
when Sir Thursfield donated it to the neighbouring farm as a
contribution to the war effort
. * Cornelius Tyte I was born in 1791 in London where he
served the apprenticeship that prepared him ultimately to establish
his clock and watchmaker business in Sadler Street, Wells, in 1820.
Three generations of the Tyte family allowed the business to trade
in clock-making and jewellery well into the twentieth century, with
first his son, Cornelius, and later his grandson, George.
AMENITIES Chilcote is on the edge of the Mendips in unspoilt
countryside a five minute drive from historic Wells with its
stunning cathedral, described by Pevsner as one of England's
finest, and moated Bishop's Palace where the swans ring a bell at
feeding time. Wells offers a fine range of individual and High
Street shops, restaurants and coffee shops, and a fabulous twice
weekly farmers' market, together with supermarkets, dentists,
orthodontist, veterinary and health centres. With its cinema,
theatre, leisure centre and two golf courses, there are also trout
lakes at Blagdon and Chew Valley, racing at Bath and Taunton and
under National Hunt rules at Wincanton, and Babington House Hotel
is also nearby.
.. Wells is exceptionally well served for education at all
stages - The Blue School an outstanding state secondary, and Wells
Cathedral School, which uniquely incorporates an international
music school and thus a cultural life of international calibre to
serve the whole community, including a state-of-the-art concert
venue planned for 2014. Millfield and Downside, as well as the
schools in Bath, Bristol, Bruton and Sherborne are easily
accessible. A short drive from Castle Cary station, which serves
London Paddington, and Bristol International Airport, the M4, M5
and A303 are also to hand.
. The celebrated Wells Cathedral is situated in the heart of
the City, offering many cultural and musical events throughout the
year, together with the historic Bishops Palace with its grounds
and moat. The medieval City is surrounded by the beauty of the
Somerset Levels and Mendip Hills.
