The area:
Ocean Village is a mixed-use marina on the mouth of the River Itchen in central Southampton. The village was originally the site of Southampton's first working docks, the "Outer Dock" which opened in 1842. The area was redeveloped in 1986 and became the leisure marina it is today.
Ocean Village has undergone a series of major, multimillion-pound redevelopment projects. In 2015 Harbour Hotels, the operator of five hotels along the South Coast of England, commenced work on the latest and final project, a mixed hotel/residential/commercial development on the disused promontory. Fittingly designed to resemble the sleek lines of a cruise ship this will include Southampton's only 5 Star hotel boasting 85 bedrooms, a luxury spa facility, swimming pool, gym, jetty restaurant and a stunning roof top champagne bar. Work is progressing well with the eagerly anticipated opening due for summer 2017.
Current recreational facilities include: two cinemas, cafes, wine bars, restaurants and a beauty salon. These include Cineworld, Harbour Lights Picturehouse (including a fully licensed cafe-bar and patio), Banana Wharf, Pitcher & Piano, Chiquitos, Merchants, The Admiral Sir Lucius Curtis (JD Wetherspoon's public house), Maritimo Lounge and Steak of the Art.
Shops and other services nearby include: Tesco Express, Blue funnel cruises, Red funnel for trips to the Isle of Wight, marina (owned by MDL) with 375 berths including some deep water berths to provide mooring facilities for tall ships and large yachts.
In the past Ocean Village has played host to the Global Challenge yacht race, and, in 2011 the Clipper round the world yacht race set sail from here. Ocean Village is also the base for the popular Royal Southampton Yacht Club which offer a wide range of facilities for water enthusiasts of all abilities from complete beginners to seasoned mariners.
