The village was prominent as a coaching stop during the 17th and 18th centuries, lying equidistant between Leicester and Northampton on the main road to London. Some of the houses on the High Street are old coaching inns and are named appropriately. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin dates from the 13th Century with registers from 1561. There is a village primary school, Welford, Sibbertoft and Sulby Endowed School (formerly just Welford and Sulby), which dates back to the early 18th century. Welford is very popular with walkers. The Jurassic way passes through the village and many walkers make use of the village's facilities. The Wharf and canal offer many waterside walks. There is a monthly newsletter called the Bugle and the village has an active social scene including; Babes and toddlers group, cross training, choir, yoga, Brownies, Beavers, Cubs, table tennis, choir, painting groups, cycling club, bridge club, dog training, WI and more. Local amenities include two golf courses at Cold Ashby and Kilworth Springs, which features an excellent restaurant called the "Attic".
