"The Want House forms part of the historic High Street in Barkway and is situated close to the centre of the village. This fine principally timber framed property is faced in mellow red brick at the back and Cambridge brick at the front, set under a peg tiled roof. The house is Grade II Listed, considered to be of architectural and historical merit, the oldest part believed to date back to the late 16th century. The present custodians of the house have undertaken a programme of some renovation, but principally modernisation, to create a very fine old house with a contemporary interior with wooden and stone flooring, exposed timbers and fireplaces with wood burning stoves. On the ground floor, there is a fine drawing room with a wood burning stove and windows on three sides, a heavily timbered dining room and a sitting room with wood burning stove in an inglenook fireplace. There is a very fine bespoke kitchen with simple oak cupboards and drawers topped by striking pink marble work surfaces and a four oven gas fired Aga. To the front of the property there is a family room with stable door to the front, a utility room and a summer room with doors to the garden. On the first floor, there are five bedrooms and two high quality refurbished bathrooms. Outside, a pair of remote controlled gates lead to the driveway and to the garage. The landscaped rear garden is west facing and has a terrace, traditional and densely packed herbaceous borders and neat lawns leading to an avenue of ornamental cherry trees. In addition, there are is a large timber storage building and a small garden shed.Directions

Bishop?s Stortford proceed west on the A120, through Little Hadham traffic lights and after about two miles, take a right hand turn beside Howe Fencing. Follow this minor country lane into Braughing and at a ?T? junction turn right then immediately left over the Ford and follow the road to a junction and turn right. Head due north along the B1368, through Hare Street and into Barkway. The Want House is situated almost in the centre of the village on the left hand side, almost opposite Burrs Lane."
