DETAILS
Shakesfield is situated on the edge of Dymock with its community pub, fine church dating back to Saxon times, with other village amenities including a spectacular golf course. The gently rolling countryside, accessible by the Daffodil Way and Poets Paths, is famous for the wonderful display of golden wild daffodils in the spring. The property is well placed between the three county towns renowned for the Three Choirs festival held in the marvellous cathedrals of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester. The picturesque market towns of Ledbury, Newent and Ross on Wye are not far distant, and access to the motorway network via the M50 is just a few miles away. Gloucester and Ledbury are convenient for rail connections.
Shakesfield has glorious gardens, a plantsmans paradise. South facing and sheltered by mature trees there is a connoisseurs collection of herbaceous plants and ornamental shrubs and trees creating areas of different character and interest and forming an attractive habitat for birds, bees and butterflies. The front garden is open and sunny with prolific flowering borders surrounding a lawn where white doves bill and coo around the dovecote. Outside the conservatory lies a brick paved terrace with sculpted stone water feature where it is a joy to relax and listen to the birdsong. The side garden is shaded by ornamental trees and a mulberry and medlar. The lawn extends from the sun terrace to a brick edged pool with pebble beach and large clumps of yellow flag iris. Along the boundary the disused railway line in a shallow cutting now holds water and forms a nature reserve attracting moorhen, mallard and the occasional kingfisher, and many large oak and ash trees are frequented by woodpeckers and other woodland birds. The back garden is an ideal space for a kitchen garden. A potting shed, timber-framed greenhouse, garden shed, summerhouse and hen house are tucked away unobtrusively. The gravelled driveway has space for parking several cars and leads to the brick built garage and workshop. This has potential to be converted into an idyllic studio.

Shakesfield is a delightful black and white half timbered cottage about 400 years old, extended in the Victorian era to give very comfortable two bed accommodation of great character set in lovely gardens. The kitchen is at the heart of the old building and the large fireplace, low beamed ceiling and quarry tiled floor enhance the period feel, while the Aga and tastefully fitted old pine units lend themselves to modern living and enjoying a meal as the sunlight floods in through the south facing windows. The sitting room is well proportioned with the sense of space increased by running together with the entrance hall, separated only by the old exposed timbers. Sliding French windows open into the large conservatory which, with double glazing and under floor heating, is a perfect environment for enjoying all seasons of the year. In summer the double bi-fold glazed doors open fully so that the sights, sounds and scents of the garden waft inside. A door from the conservatory leads into the utility room and thence on out into the rear garden. In the utility room a feature has been made of the original well which can be seen through a plate glass cover on the floor. From the entrance hall the staircase rises to the spacious landing where an upstairs toilet has been fitted to complement the well appointed family bathroom downstairs. The bedrooms reflect the differing character of the two periods of the cottage, one having exposed timbers, pitched ceiling and dormer windows while the other has a higher ceiling and a large window which overlooks the verdant gardens.
