SITUATION Alphington is a highly popular residential area of Exeter, which offers easy access to the major commuter links surrounding the city; including the M5 motorway and the A30/A38 dual carriageways. The area benefits from a wide range of local facilities including a highly regarded primary school, convenience store, post office, doctors surgery, veterinary practice, public houses and the 15th Century church of St Michael and All Angels. Sainsbury's supermarket is conveniently located on Alphington Road. The cathedral city of Exeter, with its abundance of shopping, travel and business facilities, is approximately 2 miles distant. Exeter is serviced by mainline rail links to London Paddington and Waterloo, while its International Airport lies approximately 5 miles east of the city. HISTORICAL NOTE A former manor and village, now a suburb of the city of Exeter, White's Devonshire Directory of 1850 describes Alphington as 'a neat and pleasant village on the western side of the river Exe, 1 ? miles south of Exeter. It has in its parish 1,286 inhabitants, and about 700 acres of fertile land, traversed by the South Devon Railway and Exeter Ship Canal. It has cattle fairs on the first Wednesday after the 20th June, and on the Wednesday after Michaelmasday. It was one of the principal quarters of Sir Thomas Fairfax's army, when it was blockading Exeter in 1646'. He goes on to record that a man named Stone died here at the ripe old age of 120 years, in the reign of Elizabeth 1st. Mile End Cottage, situated on the main road through the village, was rented by Charles Dickens for his parents in 1839
