The Hovel is an intriguing Grade II Listed period cottage, which offers a wealth of original features, character and architectural history. The cottage is set in an idyllic position and has the most delightful gardens which boast an array of copper plum, apple and cherry trees.

Hovels have been in existence since medieval times when they were simple one or two roomed humble dwellings, assembled by farm labourers using whatever materials they could find. During the Elizabethan period they were mostly done away with so that only a few exist today, most of which have been modernised. Thankfully, this charming and magical hovel in Ludgershall village, close to the Oxfordshire border, has survived and it is perhaps one of the last original hovels in England.

Unkindly, the dictionary describes a hovel as a ?miserable dwelling? but there is nothing at all miserable about this delightful home, with its wheat reed thatched roof neatly levelled above the attractive windows and white painted exterior.
Inside the hovel there is a spectacular and rather unusual sitting room, unlike anything you will have seen before. The ceilings are supported by branches of oak and the plastered walls bend and curve most charmingly. There is a brick fireplace with a contemporary wood-burning stove which creates a cosy environment to enjoy long winter evenings.

The property was originally just two rooms, the sitting room and the kitchen. The main bedroom, bathroom and the second bedroom have been added on at a later stage.
The galley kitchen has a belfast sink, a number of fitted units and enjoys views over the very pretty gardens. The bedrooms are arranged at either end of the property, one with fitted wardrobes. The bathroom has been tastefully re-furbished with Fired-Earth tiles and white sanitary ware.

Outside there is a brick built studio which could be used as an external office or as an occasional guest room/ annexe (subject to planning).
The gardens are approaching half an acre and are enchanting, mainly laid to lawn with mature trees and shrubs. They provide a colourful back drop for the property. Wisteria frames the front door, roses and boxed topiaried hedging can be found either side of the brick pathway.

This truly is the most unique and magical property which will melt your heart and make a wonderful second home to escape to.

Ludgershall is approximately five and a half miles southeast of Bicester and has a public house, The Bull & Butcher, a church and a village hall where there are many community events, including the biennial village fete. The property falls within the catchment of Waddesdon Church of England School, judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted and is also within reach of the Aylesbury grammar schools. The nearby village of Brill has a Church of England Primary school, a village Post Office, shop and two public houses.
