LOCATION Penlee Gardens lies on a gently south facing hillside, about a mile from Plymouth City Centre, within an area renowned for its substantial buildings and outstanding architecture. From this location there are widespread views across the City and several rooms enjoy good views to the waters of Plymouth Sound flanked on one side by the Mount Edgcumbe Estate in South East Cornwall and on the other by Staddon Heights and Jennyclliff in South West Devon. The Breakwater lies beyond. The amenities of Stoke Village are within about a quarter of a mile providing a wide range of local shops and services. The gated grounds of Penlee Gardens comprise a line of elegant and imposing buildings which are noted in Pevsners 'The Buildings of England (Devon)' as 'a shallow crescent of paired villas spaciously set out along a private drive with its own lodge. The central pair is pedimented, but other details e.g. the varied side entrances are not consistent. Set back neoclassical screen walls conceal the back gardens, an unusual feature' The City of Plymouth offers many attractions. The City Centre has undergone many significant changes in the last few years including the redevelopment of the Drake Circus area now providing a first class indoor shopping mall. The University is also of major importance lying in the centre of the City, with its associated Peninsula Medical School.
