History

The name of Widnes comes from Viking settlers and means wide-nosed or tree covered promontory. The Vikings took over the area in the 9th century. The River Mersey separated the Viking Danelaw territory to the north and the Saxon Kingdom of Mercia to the south. The building of the Sankey Canal in the 1750s brought the industrial revolution to the town and it became a centre for the chemical industry.

Today there are over 50,000 people living in Widnes. The town has undergone a redevelopment of its chemical factories and has cleaned up the area formerly contaminated by chemical waste.
