History

Originally named Bognor, this area is one of the oldest recorded Saxon-named places in Sussex, which means ‘landing place’ or ‘shore’. The Regis suffix was added to the town’s name when King George spent time in recovery at Craigwell House Aldwick in1929. When established, this area was part of South Bersted, an ancient parish in the county of Sussex. But in 1828 it gained parish status separate from South Bersted. Bognor was also a fishing village up until the eighteenth century. After it was transformed into a resort by Sir Richard Hotham tourism took over and area began to expand.

Present

Bognor still remains a smaller town on the shores of the English Channel, but today it consists of a large town centre, which has been largely pedestrianised. A great deal of residential development took place in the western and northern parts of town from the 1950s to the 1980s.Some of the more expensive places to live in PO21 include The Close and The Byeway. The Close has a current average value of £800,000 but is subject to fluctuation depending on the market. There are four detached homes on this street located in the suburb of Aldwick, close to the coast. These are large, upscale family properties that are usually home to high-earning professionals and managers. Two of the properties back up to the shore. The Byeway has an average current value of £750,000 which can change accordingly. The six properties here are large and detached, with gardens that back onto the beach. They are perfect for families. For families with younger children living on these two intersecting streets there is Bognor Regis Rose Green Infant School on Hawkins Close. However, those with older children also have Rose Green Junior School on Raleigh Road and Bognor Regis Community College on Westloats Lane. There is a supermarket located on Aldwick Road for convenient food shopping and a petrol station on Hewarts Lane for residents with vehicles. In comparison, some of the most affordable places to live in PO21 include Sylvan Way and Lyon Street West.
