Originally named Bognor, this area is one of the oldest recorded Saxon-named places in Sussex, which means ‘landing place’ or ‘shore’. The Regis suffix was added to the town’s name when King George spent time in recovery at Craigwell House Aldwick in1929. When established, this area was part of South Bersted, an ancient parish in the county of Sussex. But in 1828 it gained parish status separate from South Bersted. Bognor was also a fishing village up until the eighteenth century. After it was transformed into a resort by Sir Richard Hotham tourism took over and area began to expand.
Bognor still remains a smaller town on the shores of the English Channel, but today it consists of a large town centre, which has been largely pedestrianised. A great deal of residential development took place in the western and northern parts of town from the 1950s to the 1980s.Some of the more expensive places to live in PO21 include The Close and The Byeway.
