The second Battle of Northampton occurred on the grounds of the Belapré Abbey, which was built in 1145. Northampton had a large Jewish community until they were driven out in the 13th century. The town was heavily damaged by fires in 1516 and 1675.

NN4 is home to the Delapre Abbey. Constructed as a nunnery in 1145, it was one of the only two Cluniac nunneries build in England. After Queen Eleanor’s death, her body was brought back to Westminster Abbey. During the procession, her body was kept at the Delapre Abbey for a night. The next morning, one of the Eleanor Crosses was built upon a hill near the Abbey.

The addition of canal and railway links in 1815 and 1845, respectively, led to a population boom and the rise of the shoemaking and leather goods industries. Major housing development happened in the 1960s as a result of the New Towns Commission. The suburb of Hunsbury was agricultural land until housing development began in the 1970s. The only site in Hunsbury worth mentioning prior to that was a hill fort from the Iron Age.
Northampton is the third largest town in England with a population of about 200,000. Its excellent road, train and bus systems make it possible to commute to London for work.
