History

Sittingbourne was a popular place for pilgrims to stop and rest on their way to Canterbury. As a result, a thriving market grew in the town. Royalty that stayed in the town over the years include Henry V, Henry VIII, and Queen Victoria. The town has a strong attachment to the river barge and today there is a bronze sculpture of a bargeman on the high street.
