Bownham Mead is located on Rodborough Common, which, together with Minchinhampton Common, comprise some 700 acres of dry grassland in an area of Special Scientific Interest. This conservation area provides opportunities for walking, riding and golf. Minchinhampton, a former Cotswold market town, is the nearest centre approx. 2 miles distant where a number of local amenities including schools, Post Office, shops, library and doctors' surgery can be found, The closest major centre is Stroud 2.5 miles distant, a quirky "Bohemian" town built at the centre of Five Valleys. The canal system is presently being renovated. There is a selection of shops, restaurants, supermarkets, award-winning farmers' market and other amenities including leisure facilities. The Stroud railway line has direct links to London (Paddington).
