Deerbank History
The current 'Deerbank' house was built in 1975 on the site of the
original Deerbank House which was built in the 1920's and was one
of just a small collection of houses adjoining Norsey Woods. It was
a beautiful Arts and Crafts building, inhabited by a father and his
three girls. None of the girls married but two were successful in
their chosen fields of study. Doris Crofts was a zoologist who
catalogued all the plants and animals in Norsey Woods. She was one
of the driving forces in the creation of Norsey Woods as a public
space for Billericay. Stella Crofts was her young sister who became
an eminent potter and ceramicist. Her work is displayed in the
V&A Museum. She specialised in creating groups of animals.
Stella had her own kiln at Deerbank and occasionally broken bits of
pottery appear when the earth is turned over. Part of one of her
elephant designs has been added to the middle garden wall.
