Shepshed appears in the Domesday Book as the Anglo-Saxon name Scepeshefde Regis, which means “hill where the sheep graze (of the King)”. Regis suggests that a royal lodge was located in the area. The economy of medieval Shepshed relied heavily on the wool industry.
Much of the old town was centred around the 11th century church of St. Botolph. The church and its land were given to Odo of Bayeux by his brother William the Conqueror after 1066.
